Rev. Mark Abernethy

Senior Pastor

Rev. Mark B. Abernethy was called to be the Senior Pastor of Wapping Community Church, UCC, in October of 1998. Prior to Wapping, Mark’s first called position was as the solo pastor of Bunker Hill Congregational Church, UCC, in Waterbury, CT. Mark graduated with a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University in 1987, and a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1992. He and his wife, Kristin, have adult children. Micaela is married to Kyle Hurley and they are currently Senior High youth group leaders at the church. Joshua currently lives in Seattle. And Hannah is an elementary school teacher in a neighboring town.

While he has loved the work of ministry for more than thirty years, there are four things in ministry that Mark is particularly passionate about. He loves to create and lead inspirational worship services, preaching sermons that are timely, relevant, thought provoking and humorous. He offers compassionate care and counsel to people in the congregation and people in the greater community who are going through crisis or grief. He encourages people to identify their own God given gifts for ministry so they can use those gifts in service to others. And he advocates for issues of justice and peace in the church and beyond the church walls.

In his free time, Mark is an avid fan of every Boston sports team. He likes to read, watch movies, cook, relax at the beach and spend time with his family.
